'Disciplining the Surface' - 2023
Printed, folded, stitched. Cotton organdie, wool blend fabric, cotton thread
76 x 74 6 cms
76 x 74 6 cms
Contemplating how political and social history is reflected in the dynamics of fashion, this work alludes to the stripping away of ornament in Western masculine clothing. A movement from an aesthetic of excess to one of efficiency, closely aligned to ideas of routine and convention. From ruffs, ruffles and lace, darts and folds to starched, stiffened and ironed shirts and the conformity and social levelling of the tailored pinstripe suit.
'Construct, Deconstruct' - 2019
Manipulated and felted wool, cotton thread, mill objects
169 x 40 cms
169 x 40 cms
Fragmented and dislocated, oblique reference is made to ideas of cloth as garment and second skin, to the archive, collection and activities of the mill in making cloth. There is a disjuncture of processes, materials and artefacts in a reimagining of a lost era.
